Yorkshire OUGS Winter Weekend 2005 - exploring Cayton Bay and Scarborough Castle Hill - many thanks to Peter Robinson for leading us, and Ann for organising it!

Heading north, towards Osgodby Point Hammer for scale
It was a chilly morning when we set off , with occasional showers - Wormcasts in grey clays of Osgodby Formation
Peter's legs for scale! Hammer for scale
Stepping over the Cayton Bay fault at Osgodby Point - upthrow 110m to east Thalassionoides on fallen blocks - millepore beds
Osgodby Point Close up of bryozoans
Sedimentary structures in fallen blocks Bryozoans in millepore beds
Bob's feet for scale. Stylish footwear! The resistant marine millepore beds protect the headland and its sandstones
Ripples - currents flowing from bottom right of picture towards top left.  Yons Nab beds at Osgodby Point - laminated sandstones and siltstones (deltaics)
The Cayton Bay fault goes through Osgodby Point, Cornelian Bay, and behind the Castle Large oyster in the middle, iron-rich layer of the Cornbrash
After lunch at the Poacher's Pocket - back to the Bay - Scarborough Castle in the distance  Southern end of Cayton Bay - the strong tides have exposed the Cornbrash beds
Three layers - grey clay, iron-rich sandstone, and shelly layer We had an interesting discussion on what this could be! Shrimp burrows? Tree roots?
Upper Cornbrash exposed on the beach Beneath the Cornbrash, strange structures in the clay
Time to go - tide coming in, sun going down Rough sketch map of main faults and lithologies
Red Cliff - Osgodby Formation, Oxford Clay above, topped with Lower Calcareous Grit - fault to left of pinnacle, downthrow to West Sketch map of main faults at Cayton Bay.  More pictures on my Cayton Bay page
Chairs had to face downhill Off for a visit to the Rotunda at the start of our walk
Sunday - coffee in the warm sunshine The Rotunda Museum, Scarborough
The geological history of the coast displayed round the top We found several faults here, helped by the Cornbrash exposures!
Wow!  Look at those paintings! Scarborough Castle Hill - looking for faults!
Fossils weathering out all along the wall Scarborough Castle Hill from Marine Drive
Marine Drive wall - with stones from Hambleton Oolite and Passage Beds Stress fractures - Lower Calcareous Grit, Hambleton Oolite and Passage Beds above
Peter's arm for scale Looking south from above the Spa
Almost back to "civilisation" - and here is the Osgodby Formation again - Hackness Rock above. Looking south along the coast - Swimming Pool, Holbeck Hall Hotel landslide, White Nab; Red Cliff; Filey Brigg far left of picture
