OUGS Trip to Runswick Bay (on my birthday!  What a nice present!)

Looking south towards Kettleness, across the Bay Sedimentary structures visible in the Saltwick Formation sandstones
We went along the cliff top to look at the old alum workings Ravenscar Group sandstones at the top of the hill
Chilly, but at least it didn't rain! All this geology makes you hungry!
Making our way down past the remains of alum working Ah!  This must be our lunch spot - Port Mulgrave round the corner
Beginners luck! Ammonite fossil My walking stick for scale
First time lucky!  My sister picked this up on the beach Desiccation cracks in the rocks - field of view approx 1 metre
I had to bend over and photograph under the rock to get this view This was a pier/harbour in the mid 1800s
Plant material in the rocks Foundations of harbour at Wrackhills visible as a rectangle among the rocks
Pen for scale - approx 14 cm long Scars from the alum quarrying on Kettleness
More plant material in the rocks Close up of this area at the bottom of the Sandsend page
Stick is 1.2 metres long Stick for scale
Very jumbled rock face - possibly due to the alum working? Ammonite in the Whitby Mudstone
Unfortunately, these fossils are very fragile - best left where they are! Mudrock cliff face
Willi's feet frame another ammonite fossil in the rock platform White staining from the alum shales
The sun has come out at last! It's a long way up to where we've left the car
Runswick Bay village Well, we have looked at the rock armour, now we have to climb that steep hill - but first maybe we'll go for a coffee and a bun -
