Grey alum shales - Dogger and Cloughton sandstones above Tide going out, exposing the dome - Redcar Mudstone Formation
Ravenscar - looking across at the old alum quarries on the hill side Walking down through the golf course - Bay Town in the distance, other side of the Bay
The path down goes along the fault line The same rocks seen in the quarry on the hillside in the first picture
To the north of the Peak fault - Staithes Sandstones To the south of the fault - Cloughton sandstones, Dogger in the grass lower down - downthrow to east of approximately 150 m
The "Steel" is formed of the Staithes Formation Shales from the beach
Peak Steel - faults either side At beach level - crystals in the shales
Pencil approximately 15 cm Sandstone filled hollows?
Pyritised ammonites in the Whitby Mudstone rock platform (similar to Sandsend!) Strange features on the platform - locally called "Mermaid's dining tables"
80-100 cm across Baby seal in the rocks
Close up of a "dining table" - layers with belemnites in the shales This must be the mermaid!
About 1 metre across Pencil for scale - approximately 15 cm
