Update: Selby District Council rejected UK Coal's application for the re-use and retention of Wistow Mine in a special planning meeting held on 8 June 2005.

However - UK Coal have also submitted applications for re-use of Stillingfleet and Riccall Mines.  Still waiting to hear when those will be heard (as of 15 June).

200 locals from Wistow, Cawood, Stillingfleet and Thorpe Willoughby gathered on Monday, 14 March to express their opposition to the application for re-use of Wistow Mine site.  The original planning consent for the Selby Coalfield stipulated the removal of all buildings, plant and machinery from Gascoigne Wood and Wistow Mine sites.

Locals opposing the re-use of the Mine Site went on a sponsored walk from Wistow, via the Mine site, Cawood, and back to Wistow - we had a good turn out and a glorious day for the walk! More pics and info: http://www.returnourfarmland.co.uk/
It was a good turnout - including local candidates, babies and dogs! I hope the planning department have taken note how rural this is!
Off through the back lanes of Wistow village Wistow Mine in sight between the trees
Approaching Wistow Mine (far left of photo) Wistow Mine winding house behind the trees
Narrow winding lane - unsuitable for industrial vehicles Even the scarecrow in the next field to the Mine wears a "No" sign!
Broad Lane, Cawood A drink and a bite to eat before finishing the walk
Eventually reached Cawood - going past the primary school Refreshments at the Castle Inn - many thanks, the walking stimulates the appetite!
