Gristhorpe Bay, North Yorkshire - 2 July 2005 (Middle to Upper Jurassic)

Gristhorpe Bay, looking south - Filey Brigg in the distance View from Lebberston cliff - Red Cliff fault is to the northwest
We had often looked down on Gristhorpe Bay and wanted to visit it - but it's a long way down, with a difficult clamber to the beach At the headland (Yons Nab), the Millepore and Yons Nab beds of the Lebberston Member are visible at low tide
The weather forecast got it wrong - it was drizzling and cool Sandstone beds with hummocky cross stratification dipping into the cliff
This is the start of the climb down! The sandstone beds dip approx 14° WSW
My stick for scale Two sandstone beds separated by a shaley bed
Sedimentary structures in the exposure Line of bedding in the cliff
My rucksack for scale - plant material evident Still have to check the details, but I believe this is the Scalby Formation
Second exposure - a lot of plant material! The seaward base of the exposure
A small cave in the rocks Channel cutting across bedding?
Another interesting exposure! (Intertidal?) Wow! (My reaction as I came round the corner!) (top of rucksack just visible for scale)
Looking south Yons Nab, looking north
Here's the channel from further up the beach Nearing the headland - fallen blocks
Compare this with the view at the top (Filey visible) View from Yons Nab
Sun trying to shine through the mist - looking south, sea fret just coming on land Scarborough "floats" in the mist
Plant beds at the bottom - ferruginous organic material on the beach Lebberston member beds (marine)
Gristhorpe Member at Yons Nab Yons Nab beds - Millepore beyond
The sea is starting to cover the abandoned farm machinery which was stuck in the rocks! A long way back to the caravan for a coffee break!
Tide starting to turn - time to leave (regretfully!) A last look at the cliffs - Bob is the white "blob" middle left of picture, for scale. We now have to climb back up to the top again
