Scarborough - South Bay, 2003; Cornelian Bay, 2004

Scarborough, South Bay Beach, Scarborough South Bay
Scarborough: We had hoped to walk all the way down the Bay, but it was closed at the pool for works However, the tide was out - revealing these rocks beyond the Spa
Rocks on the promenade walk, South Bay Part of the splendid array of rocks in South Bay
Scarborough South Bay - probably the most accessible rocks on this part of the coast! Sedimentary structures easily visible

(Below - visit - August 2004)

I think Bob is admiring the dip and strike My pen for scale
We decided to investigate further along South Bay - this is near the "swimming pool" Sedimentary structures in the rocks at South Bay
Rock outcrop, Scarborough South Bay More stunning bedding layers!
Bob for scale View from the site of the Holbeck Hall Hotel landslip
(Above) sedimentary structures - north of the landslip The Bay curves round to White Nab - Cornelian Bay around the corner
We didn't go further - the tide was coming in Cornelian Bay - Osgodby Point to the left, White Nab to the right
Close up of the bedding along the Bay (more - YOUGS 2006) (Above) Cornelian Bay from top of Red Cliff
(Below) June 2004: We decided to investigate Cornelian Bay - it was a very hard scramble down! This is where I sat and sketched - ironstone, anyone?
View south towards Cayton Bay and Redcliff Lots of red-brown stones (one in top right corner) - clinometer for scale
Below - sedimentary structures in sandstones Below - clays above the sandstones - Long Nab member?
Cross bedding on Moor Grit outcrop Layers of rock with lots of sulphur evident
This is the view when we climbed down to the beach level Further down the beach
Suddenly came across this structure Pill box sat on a huge outcrop of sandstone!
Could this be what is referred to in the book as: "prominent channel sandstone"? Pill box - "planar bedded crevasse splay sandstone"? ("The Yorkshire Coast", P F Rawson, J K Wright)
